Monthly Technology Market Update Perth, Western Australia, May 2020
We know the best laid plans sometimes don’t go according to plan (ask Baldrick from Blackadder about his cunning plans!), and we can all see that C-19 will have an impact around Australia and the Globe for a little time to come. However, it’s also fantastic being in an “island within an island!”
This monthly update highlights more of the impact of C-19, as several more data points became available over time. Some good news is that we are seeing a slowly improving employment market. In the last two weeks for example online job advertiser ‘Seek’ has seen a 40.8% increase in new job advertisements in WA compared to April.
We’ve provided some brief analysis to highlight sectors still hiring and roles being filled in Western Australia which may validate some of your thinking, experience and strategies going forward.
Key takeaway – interviews are still happening, and talent is still being hired (in more contract than permanent employment).
Sectors still hiring:
· Utilities
· Software Integration firms
· Healthcare
· Government (local, state and federal)
· Niche IT service providers
The graphs below show the supply and demand of IT roles in Western Australia. Whilst we can see this took a hit in April, data coming through already shows this has started to improve in May.

In Summary: Yes, the world’s IT employment market has gone through some extreme uncertainty and a big shakeup. I’m sure you will agree that what has been fantastic to see over the last few weeks is the tribal community values of Perth’s ICT sector, people’s resilience and proactiveness, and Australian’s core spirit shining through. We’ve seen a number of data points supporting early signs of things moving towards a “new normal” post Covid-19, with contract hiring picking up and many more positive conversations about the future happening.
